Ultrafast Optical Science - Is It Feasible to Systematically Measure the Structure of Matter?
Prof. Paul Corkum, Steacie Institute for Molecular Sciences
- Laser science is really good at measuring dynamics. It is hard to imagine any other technology that can compete with it for systematic measurements of dynamics.
- But laser technology is very bad at measuring structure --- having lost the leadership decades ago to scattering techniques.
- By combining collision physics with optical science, attosecond technology provides laser science with a structural probe with sub-Angstrom resolution.
- Although we are at the very beginning, I will propose that we can perfect dynamic imaging to the point where we can influence many areas of science beyond our own.
