As a way of introduction to the following two presentations, I will give an overview of the main issues involved in the description of high-energy interactions, and the impact that MC simulations have on the fulfillment of the physics programmes at the Tevatron and LHC. I will review the recent progress in the field, and discuss the remaining open problems.
