Beyond the elastic approximation

In the previous section fairly complete (at least equilibrium) theories of the glassy phases which arise in periodic elastic models were developed. We must now ask to what extent these theories hold in unconstrained models which allow for topological defects, and in addition what new physics might arise in going beyond the elastic models.
