New surveys of atomic gas in the Milky Way have revealed quantitative information about the warp, the global non-circular and non-cylindrical motions of the gas that allow us to make useful inferences about the gravitational potential of the Milky Way, and how it has been perturbed. Information about the radial distribution of the molecular gas reveals a severe gas depletion problem that is mirrored in most other spiral galaxies.
