Based on results from the Aquarius programme of N-body simulation of
the formation of a galactic halo (including the largest such
simulation to date), I will discuss the optimal strategy for detecting
gamma radiation from the annihilation of dark matter particles in the
halo of the Mily Way. Contrary to current pre-conceptions, I will
demonstrate that the strongest signal will come from diffuse emission
from the halo of the Milky Way, not from known satellites. I will also
discuss the implications of this simulation for direct detection of
dark matter in the galaxy.
