This session will be devoted to recent progress in studying the activity-dependent synaptic transmission in neocortex. We will start by introducing the phenomena of short-term synaptic plasticity. Different types of short-term plasticity will be described, as well as its relation to the types of neocortical neurons connected by the synapses. We will then discuss the ways of modeling the dynamic synaptic transmission on different levels of complexity. Computational models of information transmission, based on synaptic properties, will be introduced. We will also discuss about the relation between short- and long-term synaptic plasticity, and discuss spike-time dependent synaptic plasticity.
