Neural Pattern Formation Miniconference (October 13-17, 2003)
Coordinator: S. Schiff
Funding: NIH
This 'Miniconference', held within the ongoing workshop on Pattern Formation
in Physics and Biology at KITP, will focus on pattern formation in Neural
Systems. The organized activity of nervous systems exists as patterns in
space and time, yet our ability to meaningfully analyze such patterns, and
our ability to construct theory relevant to the normal and pathological
neuronal patterns in health and disease, remains in its early stages.
Nevertheless, the tools of pattern formation physics are already advanced
well beyond the level customarily employed in neuroscience applications. The
goal of this workshop will be to:
- Present a selection of cutting edge theoretical applications of pattern
formation physics and mathematics in neuroscience.
- Present a selection of cutting edge neuroscience experiments where a
spatiotemporal analysis, and theoretical framework, is needed.
- Define for both neural theory and experiments, where the productive
directions lie given present knowledge and techniques.
- Form novel collaborations between theorists and experimentalists.
- Define diseases where spatiotemporal patterns may be intimately related
to the expression of symptoms or cause of the disease, and where a pattern
analysis might lead to novel therapy.
